Introduction
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have the poorest health of any identifiable sub-population in Australia. Substantial social and economic disadvantage, a history of political oppression and an experience of substantial discrimination have left Aboriginals with extremely poor health. (Najman, 1999; Thomson) Aboriginal infant mortality rates are between 2.3 times and 3.5 times those for the whole of Australia. (‘Enough to make you sick', Research paper no.1, 1992) The unemployment rate for Aboriginals is strikingly higher than that for non-aborigines. (National Health Strategy;1992) Kambu Medical Centre aims to provide supportive information and resources to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people in Ipswich and West Moreton region. (Bond, 19/8/03) This service helps improve access, discrimination and awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues, however requires more government funding, more staff and more equipment to dramatically improve the poor health standard of Aborigines.

Today Aboriginals are left struggling with harmful diseases, unemployment, providing shelter for themselves and their families, supplying daily food and surviving in a white dominated world. Aboriginals hold the unwanted criticism of behaviour, unemployment, alcoholics, carelessness, black, poor people. The majority of Aboriginals are experiencing difficultly surviving in today's society because of racial discrimination. After at least 50 000 years of a strong and intact culture, the Aboriginal population was decimated by diseases introduced by Europeans, and those remaining were displaced from their lands and forced to change their lifestyle.
