"A Small, Good Thing"
Raymond Carver’s, “ A Small, Good Thing” (404 – 426) is a heart touching story that concerns the death a child and the failures of communication. Everyday we encounter people that we just cannot communicate with. My mom has a special touch, and can usually look into someone and find a way to communicate. In my own life, I cannot always communicate well with others in my own relationships, but I can always give the best I have to offer. “ Eating is a small, good thing in a time like this” (425).
In the beginning Ann goes to the baker’s to order her son a birthday cake but “there were no pleasantries between” her and the baker (405). Ann could not understand why the baker was not excited for her; she figured he had gone through family birthdays before. Then, when Ann’s son Scotty is hospitalized, unconscious, the doctors reassure the parents that all will be well when the boy awakes. The Doctor’s and Nurse’s cannot and will not answer their questions. Just when the Doctor says he should wake up any minute now, Scotty dies, “ a-one-in-a-million circumstances” (419). The lack of communication just made isolation and confusion deepen. If there is a lack of communication, situations become very uncomfortable.
My mom works as a school nurse, and I look up to her good communication skills. She always finds the best in everyone. My mom has to communicate with kids and adults on a daily basis, and answer medical questions. I know for her she has a hard time telling others bad news, but she is always straightforward and honest. My mom also has always been able to communicate well with me, and for that reason we have a close relationships. One of the most important skills to have in life is being able to communicate with others.
In the relationships that I have had both with my family and in dating, I have found it very hard to communicate well with others all the time. My mom and I have good communication...
