30 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Went To My First Pennsic
1.) The first thing I would suggest is bring plenty of money. The first 3 Pennsics I went to I never had enough money. I had to stop spending money just so I could eat and put gas in my car on the drive home. You see so much cool stuff your first couple of years you want to buy everything. Even if you only buy a fraction, it's still a whole LOT of money. So, bring more than you think you'll need. And don't forget to bring a phone card. Cellular connections are notoriously bad at Pennsic. You never know when you might need to call your significant other, your work, your kids, the babysitter, your parents, etc. The only phones there are pay phones and phone cards from Wal-Mart are cheaper than using the ones associated with your home phone.
2.) As Jason can attest from years past, put money someplace safe for the trip home. Don't touch it again until the ride home. Figure your gas and food/snack cost coming up, add $10 for fatigue and dehydration, and that will get you through. Pay attention to how much gas you use coming up. Plan on that or more to go home. A lot of people at Pennsic lock their "going home" money in their trunk or glove box. That way, even if you loose your money (Like Jason in years past) or it gets stolen (see the about 200 unhappy people at Pennsic every year and you will know) you can still drag your ass back home. Nothing feels worse than having to borrow money from someone just so you can go home!
3.) Drink plenty of water! More than you think you will need. Everyone always gets tired from being dehydrated at war. The combination of fighting, hot temperatures, too much sun, and lots of alcohol will dehydrate anyone.
4.) DON'T DRINK COOPER'S WATER!!!!! It is nasty and WILL make you sick. The only amendment to this rule is you CAN drink coopers water at the battlefield. It is filtered 5 times. You can watch them do it. That is the ONLY place you can drink it, and drink that only when you HAVE to...
