Samantha Jackins is 23 years old. She dropped out of high school during grade 11. She now has two part time jobs at the food court at the moment. She is struggling, because two jobs are not enough to bills. She currently lives in a basement with a friend, who has also dropped out of school. Samantha feels humiliated, although it was her decision, because she is the only person in the family who has done so. She has suffered not only financially, but also socially. Samantha has to take the bus to work everyday, because she is not able to pay for a car.
Q. Hi Samantha. I would like to ask you a few questions to help the high school students understand the importance of education.
A. I¡¯d be glad to answer any questions.
Q. Why did you drop out?
A. I dropped out of school, because I was young. I simply didn¡¯t care. I was failing most of my classes anyway, so I just gave up.
Q. Do you regret it now?
A. Of course I do. I can¡¯t get decent jobs with my education. The highest amount of money I can get per hour is around 9 dollars. If I didn't have this much experience, I¡¯ve wouldn¡¯t even be getting this much.
Q. How did your parents take it when you told them?
A. They were so upset, when I told them. They didn't even talk to me for a week. Finally they accepted the fact that I quit, but that didn't stop their disappointment in me.
Q. Have you thought of going back to school?
A. I want to. The only thing that seems to stop me is my dignity. To tell you the truth, I¡¯ve already signed up for night school.
Q. That¡¯s very good for you! What do you want to do when you get your high school diploma?
A. That¡¯s easy! I¡¯m going to go to college. That¡¯s what I was planning to do before I quit school, and that¡¯s what I am going to do. I just regret that I wasted so many...
